About this piece:

The Authenticity of a Hand-Carved Piece

This statue embodies Buddha in the Teaching Transmission posture, a powerful symbol of setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion. Carved directly from a solid block of Suar wood by talented Balinese artisans, it is the result of meticulous work where every detail – from the fluid drape of the robe to the serene and teaching expression of the face – is hand-carved.

- Direct carving: Every curve, every fold, and every line is crafted manually, offering deep relief and a vibrant presence impossible to reproduce with industrial molding.

- A unique piece: The vintage orange patina with mint nuances, the signs of wear, and the natural wood grain make each piece completely singular.

Properties of Suar Wood (Albizia Saman)

Suar is a fast-growing exotic species, particularly prized in Balinese craftsmanship for its exceptional qualities:

- Cross-grain: Offers great structural stability, limiting the risk of cracks on 40 cm pieces.

- Density: Weighing approximately 5 kg, the statue has a low center of gravity ensuring perfect stability and an imposing presence.

- Visual rendering: The natural fibers alternate warm tones that contrast beautifully with the vintage orange patina, creating an authentic and warm interplay of materials.

Iconography and Symbolism – The Teaching Transmission Mudra (Dharmachakra Mudra)

Buddha is represented in the Teaching Transmission posture, also known as Dharmachakra Mudra (the Wheel of Dharma).

In this position, the hands are placed in front of the chest, forming a circle with the thumb and index finger, symbolizing the setting in motion of the Wheel of Teaching. This mudra refers to Buddha's first sermon in Sarnath, where he transmitted the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

It embodies:

- The transmission of wisdom and spiritual teaching

- Harmony between method and understanding

- An invitation to follow the path of awakening and inner peace

Perfect for a meditation space, a living room, or a spiritual corner, this statue diffuses an energy of upliftment and clarity.

Vintage Orange Finish

The color is not a uniform paint but a true artisanal multi-layer patina:

- Manual application with controlled aging to reproduce the effect of an ancient piece exposed to sun and time.
-  Subtle shades of warm orange, touches of mint, and patinated areas that let the wood grain show through.
-  Depth: The patina accumulates in the hollows and carved reliefs, accentuating volumes and giving an almost living dimension to the statue.

A word from the artisan

“The vintage orange patina on Suar wood requires several steps of dyeing, aging, and selective sanding. The goal is to capture the spirit of an ancient statue while allowing the living structure and deep energy of the wood to breathe. Each piece carries a teaching.”

Care and Uniqueness

Each statue is a unique creation. Slight variations in grain, shades of orange patina, or carving details are normal and constitute the very signature of artisanal authenticity.
Care instructions: A simple soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct heat sources or humidity to preserve the natural beauty of the solid wood.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Will the statue I receive be exactly the one in the photo?

It is a hand-carved solid wood sculpture. The model, the Teaching Transmission posture, and the dimensions are identical, but the wood grain and patina details vary slightly from one piece to another. Your piece is unique.

Is Suar wood sturdy?

Yes. It is a dense and heavy wood (approximately 5 kg). It offers excellent durability over time without easily cracking.

Is the vintage orange finish likely to chip?

No. It is an artisanal patina that penetrates the wood fibers. It remains stable with indoor use.

Can I place it outdoors?

Absolutely not. This statue is designed exclusively for indoor use. Humidity and UV rays would damage the patina and the wood.

Why is this statue more expensive than a resin version?

Because it is genuine direct carving work on solid wood. An artisan spends several days carving each 40 cm block to bring it to life and achieve this unique vintage finish.
