About this piece:

A hand-carved solid wood sculpture

This statue represents a seated Buddha, hand-carved from Suar wood (Albizia Saman), a tropical species widely used in Indonesia for sculpture. The piece is worked from a solid block: roughing out, shaping, carving details, then finishing. This process explains two important things:

- the relief is real (it is not a molded reproduction)
- each statue is different, because wood and the artisan's hand never produce a "standardized" result.

Suar wood: why it is sought after in sculpture

Suar is appreciated for its visible grain and its stability when properly dried. In sculpture, it allows for:

- good rendering of volumes (curves "catch" the light well)
- clear details (face, drapery, hands)
- pronounced grain that gives a lively appearance, even on smooth areas

The mudra: Vitarka Mudra (teaching and transmission)

The raised hand forms the Vitarka Mudra: thumb and forefinger meet in a circle, the palm is turned outwards. In Buddhist iconography, this mudra is associated with teaching, explanation, and the transmission of knowledge.

This gesture refers to a precise idea:

- to transmit (the circle symbolizes continuity, circulation)
- to clarify (explaining, guiding, aiding understanding)
- to open (palm outwards: facing others)

Posture and visual interpretation

The seated posture, stable and upright, is deliberately codified:

- grounding: settled sitting position, solid legs and base
- presence: verticality of the torso, calm face
- intention: the hand gesture takes on the main role (teaching)

Details (drapery, expression, volumes) vary according to the workshop and the artisan, but the overall design respects a traditional interpretation.

Limewashed finish: what really changes

The limewashed finish is not an opaque paint. It serves to lighten the wood while allowing:

- the grain to show through
- natural variations in fibers to appear
- a matte, slightly patinated finish

Result: the statue retains its wooden appearance (visible material), but with a lighter and visually softer tone.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Will the statue I receive be the one in the photo?

This is solid wood carved by hand, not a plastic mold. The model, posture, and dimensions are identical, but the wood grain and carving details vary from one piece to another. Your piece is unique.

Is Suar wood strong?

It is one of the most stable woods for carving. It is very dense and heavy (4.5 kg), which guarantees excellent durability over time without easily cracking, unlike lighter woods.

Will the white finish peel off?

No. This is not a thick paint that cracks, but a limewash that penetrates the wood fibers. It is fixed and will not change over time with indoor use.

Why is this statue more expensive than a resin version?

Because it is a direct carving. A Balinese artisan spent several days carving this 40 cm block of wood to bring it to life. You are buying pure craftsmanship, not an industrial product.

How can I be sure it's Vitarka Mudra?

The sign is precise: the right hand is raised with the thumb and index finger forming a perfect circle. This is the universal symbol of the transmission of knowledge and teaching.

Can I put it in my garden?

Absolutely not. Suar wood and the limewashed finish are meant for indoor use. Humidity and rain would destroy the patina and eventually cause the wood to rot.

What maintenance is required to keep the white appearance?

As little as possible. A simple feather duster or dry cloth once in a while. Absolutely no water or household products, as these would permanently stain the wood.
